CITY2 Captures Frontier Division, Earns Top Spot in Western Conference
CITY2 earned a point against Sporting KC II in their final regular season match at Ralph Korte Stadium on Sunday night. The match ended 1-1 in regular time, with Sporting KC II capturing a 5-4 win in shootout. Despite the draw, CITY2 clinched the top seed in the Western Conference following Portland Timbers2 2-0 win over then first place team Tacoma Defiance.
CITY2 took the early lead in the 12th minute through Kyle Hiebert who nodded home a corner kick from Akil Watts.
CITY2 started the second half on the front foot, dominating possession as they searched for the second goal of the game. Sporting KC II equalized in the 63rd minute against the run of play through TJ Fatah who slotted home from close range.
The match came to life following the goal as both teams searched for the go-ahead goal. CITY2 created other chances to score but a combination of good defending and saves from Sporting KC II goalkeeper Carlito Saylon, forced the game into a shootout.
After tonight’s results in the Western Conference, CITY2 will face fourth-seeded North Texas SC in the MLS NEXT Pro playoffs.
