Match Preview | St. Louis CITY SC Travels to Canada to Face Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Match Preview - STL v VAN

St. Louis CITY SC will head north of the border to take on Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place this Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. CT with the match streaming live on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app and broadcasted via radio on KYKY Y98.1 FM (English) and KXOK 102.9 FM (Spanish).

CITY SC earned another point at home against Atlanta United in their last match. Indiana Vassilev scored his third goal of the season off an assist from João Klauss and Jayden Reid. The match was Reid’s first MLS start. Michael Wentzel, St Louis CITY2 captain, also made his MLS debut with the team in the draw.

Wentzel and Reid starting the match meant this was the first time in CITY SC history where two players on loan from CITY2 started together in an MLS match. Following the last match, there has now been a total of 23 players that have played minutes for both CITY2 and St. Louis CITY SC at some point in their stint in St. Louis.

With his assist, Reid became the 20th different player to register an assist in MLS play for St. Louis CITY SC. So far this season, 12 different players have provided an assist, 11 players have found the back of the net and 27 players have made an appearance in MLS regular season play.

The upcoming match will be the third meeting between the two sides with both teams winning their home leg of the fixture last season. CITY SC defeated the Whitecaps 3-1 at CITYPARK but fell 3-0 at BC Place towards the tail end of the season.

For the St. Louis fans, the home leg of the Vancouver match brings good memories, as Miguel Perez, CITY SC’s second Homegrown player, scored his first goal for the club in stoppage time. Eduard Löwen also recorded a goal in that match.

Defenders Jake Nerwinski and Tim Parker will be making returns to BC Place after stints in Vancouver earlier in their careers. Nerwinski joined CITY SC ahead of the 2023 season from Vancouver after making 141 appearances for the Whitecaps. Parker was drafted by Vancouver in 2015 and made 76 appearances in three seasons.

Vancouver enters the contest with a 3-3-2 home record, with their last home win coming against Colorado on June 1. The Whitecaps are currently on a two-game losing streak after falling on the road to New England and Portland by a combined score of 5-2. Ryan Gauld leads the team in goals with nine and has chipped in with four assists as well.
