Match Preview | St. Louis CITY SC Heads West for Game Two of Round One’s MLS Cup Playoffs Best-of-3 Series Against Sporting KC

St. Louis CITY SC heads to Children’s Mercy Park to take on Sporting KC for the second match of Round One’s Best-of-3 series in the Audi 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs. St. Louis CITY SC fell 4-1 in the opening game of the Round One MLS Cup Playoffs Best-of-3 Series at CITYPARK. Kansas City’s Logan Ndenbe opened the scoring with a goal in the 27th minute before CITY SC defender Tim Parker knocked in the equalizer a minute later. The away side regained the lead with two more first-half goals, and then Daniel Salloi pushed Kansas City’s lead to 4-1 with a goal in the 61st minute.

St. Louis followed up their historic inaugural regular season by becoming the eighth expansion team to reach the playoffs in its inaugural season and the first since Nashville SC and Inter Miami in 2020. Nashville and the Chicago Fire, who won MLS Cup in 1998, are the only expansion teams to progress past their first round in the playoffs.

St. Louis posted a 6-3-8 record on the road in the regular season, scoring 21 goals across those matches. St. Louis earned 21 points on the road in the regular season, which was the sixth best away points total in the league. CITY SC’s six away wins was one shy of LAFC’s record of seven for an expansion team in their first year.

This match will mark the fifth time both teams square off this season. St. Louis CITY SC edged Sporting Kansas City 2-1 in the overall record for the regular season, while Sporting KC earned the first win of the post-season. With their victory in the last match, Sporting KC won the first road match this season between both teams. Overall, St. Louis has outscored Sporting KC by 10-7 across the four matches.

Sporting KC posted a 9-3-6 record at home in the regular season, earning 30 points which ranked 14th in the league. In their last match at Children’s Mercy Park, Sporting KC edged San Jose Earthquakes 4-2 on penalties in the Wildcard Round of the MLS Cup Playoffs. Sporting KC have scored 30 goals and conceded 21 at home this season.
