St. Louis CITY SC acquired midfielder Indiana Vassilev from Aston Villa, the club announced today. Vassilev is signed to a two-year contract through the end of the 2024 MLS regular season with option years in 2025 and 2026. St. Louis first acquired Vassilev’s MLS rights through the MLS expansion draft.
“We were ecstatic to push Indy’s deal over the line to bring him to St. Louis,” said Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel. “Indy is a highly coveted American youth international, who shows a lot of dynamic attributes in the midfield. His experience at the various levels of the Premier League, MLS and U.S. youth national team is impressive for his age.”
Vassilev began his professional career with Aston Villa during the FA Cup in 2020 at 18-years-old. Following his first cap with Villa in the FA Cup, he made four appearances during the 2019-20 Premier League season. Vassilev was then loaned to both Burton Albion (League One) and Cheltenham Town (League Two) during the 2020-21 season, accumulating 24 appearances between the two squads.
Following his stint in England, Vassilev recently spent the last season-and-a-half with Inter Miami CF. The Savannah, Georgia native appeared in 45 of the 48 regular-season matches he was with Miami and allied five goals.
For country, Vassilev has risen within the U.S. Youth National team from the Under-16 team through the Under-20 squad. The midfielder earned his first youth national team cap at 15-years-old with the U-16 team during an international friendly and made a total of eight appearances. Vassilev has made a total of 33 appearances with five goals at the U.S. Youth International level.
