St. Louis CITY SC Academy’s U-15 and U-17 teams took part in an eventful first weekend of action in the 2024 Generation adidas Cup, highlighted by the U-15s winning their group to secure an automatic bid into the U-15 Championship Bracket.
Both sides battled on the pitch against fierce competition to kickoff play in the preeminent international youth soccer tournament. The U-15s opened play against LAFC U-15s, drawing them 1-1 before falling just short in the ensuing penalty shootouts for an additional point. In their two matches after that, the boys defeated Atlanta United FC U-15s 3-2 and took down Premier League giant Manchester United’s U-15 side 1-0 to go undefeated in group stage play. Forward Jack Hennessy led the team with two goals across the three matches.
Meanwhile, the U-17s began group stage play against Portland Timbers U-17s, falling 3-0. Next up was the Atlanta United FC U-17 team, which eked out a 1-0 victory. The boys wrapped up group stage action with a thrilling 1-0 win against their counterparts from Brazilian powerhouse Flamengo. Goalkeeper Lucas McPartlin earned Man of the Match honors for his efforts in the shutout victory.
The U-15s will begin their quest for the 2024 Generation adidas Cup title with a Round of 16 matchup against Premier League club Arsenal FC’s U-15 squad on Wednesday, April 3. Kickoff is slated for 11:00 a.m. CT, with the match streaming on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
For the U-17s, Generation adidas Cup action will shift over to consolation group play, with the team competing in Group B alongside Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-17s, D.C. United U-17s and Liga MX side C.F. Monterrey’s U-15s. Their three-match slate begins against C.F. Monterrey on Wednesday, April 3, at 1:30 p.m. CT.
