St Louis CITY2 (14-6-3, 46 points) will hit the road to Denver for a match against Colorado Rapids 2 (6-13-4, 23 points). The match will kick off at 4:00 p.m. CT on Sunday, September 8 at University of Denver Soccer Stadium and will be streamed on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
CITY2 clinched a playoff spot with their 3-2 comeback win against Austin FC II at CITYPARK on Labor Day. CITY2 has a three-match win streak and will look to add another win against Colorado Rapids 2 who sit at the bottom of MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference standings. St Louis will face Rapids 2 for the final time this season after meeting previously twice in the calendar year.
Austin FC II opened the scoring on Monday night early in the first half, but Mykhi Joyner added his thirteenth goal of the season from the penalty spot. ATX responded with another goal before halftime but in the second half, Joyner notched another goal from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute to even the score at 2-2. It wasn’t until the 89th minute when Brendan McSorley scored from an assist by Seth Antwi to earn the 3-2 comeback victory. The win clinched a playoff berth for CITY2 who have the second-best record in MLS NEXT Pro play. Additionally, St Louis earned their eighth home victory.
McSorley and Joyner have scored in back-to-back matches, both marking five and fourteen goals, respectively. Joyner’s fourteen goals are the most goals in a single season in CITY2 history, which currently ranks second in the golden boot race this season.
St Louis has already bested their 2023 away record having won six games on the road and will look to mark their seventh win against Colorado Rapids 2.
The teams met for the first game of the 2024 season at CITYPARK, and the Rapids 2 earned three points despite a goal from John Klein. The second meeting between the teams was on June 2 in Denver and saw CITY2 comeback to earn the 3-2 victory. Joyner, Klein, and Wan Kuzain scored to earn three points for St Louis. St Louis is 3-2-1 overall against Colorado Rapids 2.
Rapids 2 is coming off a 2-2 draw against North Texas SC on Sunday night with NTX winning the penalty shootout 5-4. In August, Colorado was 2-0-2, with the team scoring eight goals across their four matches and at home, Colorado’s record is 3-6-2. Midfielder, Marlon Vargas leads Rapids 2 in goals scored with ten and leads the team in assists with six.
