Match Preview | St Louis CITY2 Hosts Minnesota United FC 2 at CITYPARK

St Louis CITY2 (15-6-3, 49 points) returns to CITYPARK for their second to last home game of the season to face Minnesota United FC 2 (6-15-3, 24 points). The match will kick off at 6:00 p.m. CT on Sunday, September 15 and will be streamed on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.

CITY2 traveled to Denver last Sunday and earned a 3-1 comeback victory against Colorado Rapids 2. The Rapids opened the scoring in the first half, but an own goal tied the match at 1-1. Brendan McSorley scored his sixth goal of the season and third consecutive goal in three matches to give the team a 2-1 lead in the second half. Michael Wentzel scored his first goal of the season late in the second half with a wonder strike from outside the box to secure the 3-1 victory for St Louis. Wentzel’s goal made him the 11th different CITY2 player to score this season. With the assist on Wentzel’s goal, John Klein leads CITY2 in assists with five.

The four match win streak for CITY2 has seen the team score 13 goals. CITY2 has scored three or more goals in each of their last four matches with two of those matches being comeback wins against Austin FC II and Colorado Rapids 2. St Louis has already surpassed their points total from last season (46) and sit just three points out of the top spot in the MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference standings with 49 points.

St Louis has won eight games at CITYPARK and will look to add a ninth against Minnesota United FC 2 who have 2-9-0 record on the road.

CITY2 and MNUFC2 first met on Friday, May 3 in Minnesota, and Mykhi Joyner and Wan Kuzain scored to help the team earn a 2-1 victory. CITY2 has a four-match win streak entering Sunday’s contest against MNUFC2 that began when the two teams faced off one month ago in Minnesota. St Louis earned a 3-0 shutout on Sunday, August 18 which saw Ryan Becher, Mykhi Joyner, and Caden Glover score.

St Louis and Minnesota have faced each other twice this season with both meetings occurring in Blaine, Minnesota but Sunday’s match at CITYPARK will conclude the regular season matchup between the clubs.
