St Louis CITY2 (16-7-4, 53 points) returns home to CITYPARK for the team’s final regular season game of the year against Tacoma Defiance (13-9-5, 45 points). The match will kick off at 3:00 p.m. CT and will be streamed on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
CITY2 found the back of the net three times against Ventura County FC last Sunday at William Rolland Stadium. Michael Wentzel earned the first goal of the night off a free kick which was his second goal of the season. VCFC responded with two goals in the 52nd and 68th minutes but Brendan McSorley scored his first of two goals just five minutes later to even the score at 2-2. McSorley scored again and earned his first professional brace by scoring in the 82nd minute.
St Louis earned all three points against VCFC and solidified their second-place spot in the MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference. CITY2 improved their away record to eight wins and doubled their away wins from last season which was just four.
Mykhi Joyner earned his nineteenth goal contribution (15 goals, four assists). McSorley, who is in his first year of professional soccer, marked his sixth goal in his last five appearances. Wentzel joined Oscar Benitez as the only other CITY2 defender to have scored two or more goals. Hosei Kijima earned his third assist of the season and Tyson Pearce earned his first.
CITY2 is 4-1-1 all time against Tacoma Defiance. The teams previously met once this season on June 6 at Starfire Sports Complex and John Klein scored the only goal to help St Louis earn the 1-0 win and shutout.
Tacoma Defiance has already clinched an MLS NEXT Pro playoff berth. In their last five games, the Defiance are 3-1-1, most recently defeating Houston Dynamo Dos with a 2-0 shutout. The Defiance are 4-8-1 on the road this season. Tacoma’s leading goal scorer is Chris Aquino who has notched ten goals. Three players including Snyder Brunell, Burke Fahling, and Travian Sousa have earned four assists.
