Expansion Teams Collide

San Diego FC opened last weekend against LA Galaxy as the 30th expansion team in league history. Prior to San Diego, St. Louis CITY kicked off their expansion season in 2023 with a bang, becoming the first expansion team to win their first five matches of the season and the first team to win their conference in their inaugural season. San Diego had a winning start to life in MLS, defeating the reigning MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy 2-0. With their 2-0 road victory over the Galaxy, SDFC became the second MLS expansion team to win their inaugural match since 2019, joining St. Louis CITY SC in 2023. SDFC became just the third MLS expansion team out of ten total to win their inaugural match since 2017, joining LAFC (2018) and St. Louis CITY SC (2023). CITY SC will look to spoil the party at Snapdragon Stadium when the two teams meet on Saturday.

Undefeated Start to the Season

In two seasons, CITY SC have remained undefeated in their first five matches, recording a total six wins and four draws (6-0-4 record). St. Louis continued its undefeated streak on opening night with a draw against Colorado Rapids, improving their record to 1-0-2, while scoring four goals in that span.

A Look at the Last Match

Roman Bürki earned his 16th career MLS clean sheet and the first in a season opener for CITY SC while Alfredo Morales and Conrad Wallem made their debuts coming off the bench. For the second time in club history, CITY SC kept its opponent from registering a shot on target (the other being a 1-0 victory over Austin FC on April 14, 2024). CITY SC outshot the Rapids 18-2, out possessed them with 54% of the ball and outputted an xG of 1.8 on the day to Colorado's 0.3.

Scouting San Diego FC

SDFC is coming off an impressive 2-0 win on the road over the defending MLS Cup champions LA Galaxy. SDFC’s Designated Player Anders Dreyer tallied the team’s two first-ever goals in the win. Hirving “Chucky” Lozano and Tomás Ángel each recorded an assist in the match.
