Saint Louis Fashion Fund and St. Louis CITY SC Share Common Goal of Elevating STL
From the late 19th century until the end of WWII, St. Louis was second only to New York in terms of garment manufacturing. Dubbed “Shoe Street, USA,” Washington Avenue once claimed more shoe manufacturers than any other street in the world. Saint Louis Fashion Fund was founded in 2014 to support St. Louis’ growing modern impact on the fashion industry through fashion education, outreach, and champion emerging designers. Runway at CITYPARK is one of the 10 for 10 events celebrating the Saint Louis Fashion Fund’s 10th Anniversary in 2024.
“I kept seeing these amazing photos from CITY SC players wearing the latest fashions as they arrived to matches,” said Saint Louis Fashion Fund Co-founder and Board Chair Susan Sherman. “And I thought – we need to get them involved in Gent. Many of the themes we see from CITY SC – sustainability, soccer jerseys, and sports-inspired fashion – are dominating menswear trends in 2024. This is a perfect opportunity for people to celebrate St. Louis’ bright future in sports and fashion.”
Spearheaded by Dwight Carter, CEO of Brainchild Next and Saint Louis Fashion Fund board member, Gent Men’s Fashion Week provides a platform and powerful spotlight for emerging and established St. Louis designers. Carter has also coached soccer for over 15 years and is a CITY SC Community Coach for the CITY Futures youth soccer program at its Play On University City location and Play On+ select team. For him, the opportunity to partner with CITY SC on Gent was a unique opportunity for the two communities to support each other.
“As the producer for Gent as well a CITY SC Community Coach, I live in both the men’s fashion and soccer world here in St. Louis, and I see the common threads. Both are about creativity, positive energy, and pride in St. Louis. It will be wonderful to bring them together at CITYPARK,” said Carter.
Since the beginning, STL CITY SC has set out to celebrate St. Louis arts culture as part of its “more than soccer” mission, including hosting the triennial civic arts exhibition Counterpublic, publishing the arts and fashion book Inaugural with SoccerBible, highlighting local music and visual arts at every match, investing in community murals, and partnering with local designers like Lusso and Profield Reserve on CITY SC fashion merchandise.
“St. Louis has a rich history in the fashion industry, as storied as our history in soccer,” said Lee Broughton, Chief Brand Architect and part of the ownership group of St. Louis CITY SC. “Many of our players love men’s fashion, and professional athletes across the world are driving trends in men’s fashion and footwear. We are proud to be part of this effort to elevate St. Louis’ legacy in both fashion design and soccer culture.”
