St. Louis CITY Stadium Hits Another Major Milestone With the Completion of Its Structural Steel Phase
The vision for St. Louis CITY SC’s world-class soccer stadium, surrounding campus and team practice facilities took another huge step forward this week as the construction team completed the structural steel phase of the Major League Soccer stadium project.
The placement of the final steel beam of the stadium’s superstructure by the club’s construction partners – the joint venture of Mortenson | Alberici | L. Keeley (MAKjv) – brings the project one step closer to completion as the stadium starts to become a distinct part of the St. Louis skyline and the growing urban landscape in Downtown West.
More than 5,326 tons (or just over 10 million pounds) of steel has been used so far in the building of St. Louis CITY Stadium. Fabricated by Hillsdale Fabricators, a division of the St. Louis-based Alberici Constructors, the stadium’s heaviest steel beam weighed in at 76,000 pounds.
In addition to the steel structure, the pre-cast phase of the stadium project is also now complete and the concrete floors on all of the decks are placed. With over 900,000 craft hours of work under their belt and the expectation to surpass the 1 million craft-hour mark this September, the construction team is currently erecting the highly visible canopy scaffold and continues to work on the roofing, curtain walls, field lighting, speaker supports and metal panels for the new stadium.
With these milestones complete, the next major phase of the project includes exterior enclosure and interior mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and finishes. The team is also looking forward to celebrating the installation of the first seats in the stadium later this year.
Developments to the team’s growing footprint south of Market Street are also ramping up. While underground utilities and foundation work for the fan pavilion is ongoing, the foundation work for the team’s new training complex is nearing completion and the construction team will soon begin placing the steel structure for St. Louis CITY’s state-of-the-art training facility.
