St Louis CITY2 looks to extend their undefeated start to the season during the team’s home opener at Energizer Park against cross-state rivals Sporting KC II on Sunday, March 23 at 4:00 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
After being named MLS NEXT Pro’s Team of Matchweek 1, CITY2 faced Sporting KC II last Friday earning a 1-0 win at Children’s Mercy Victory Field. Mykhi Joyner scored his first goal of the season in the 16th minute off an assist from Brendan McSorley. CITY2 maintained the lead for the remainder of the match and picked up another three points on the road.
It was a big night for many CITY2 players including goalkeeper Colin Welsh, an Overland Park, Kansas native who earned his first professional win and shutout after being selected in the MLS SuperDraft in December. Fellow SuperDraft pick, Emil Jääskeläinen also made his CITY2 debut after signing with the team on February 27. Additionally, Wan Kuzain returned to the field after suffering a leg injury last season.
With the shutout against SKC II, CITY2 earned back-to-back clean sheets to start the season for the first time in the team’s history. On Sunday, the squad will aim to match the unbeaten record set by the 2022 CITY2 team, who started the first three games of the MLS NEXT Pro season with three wins.
