St Louis CITY2 (0-1-0) welcomes North Texas SC (0-0-1) to CITYPARK for a showdown on Sunday, March 24. The match kicks off at 6:00 p.m. CT and will be streamed on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
CITY2 and North Texas SC faced off twice last season, with the latter coming out ahead in the season series. The two sides first met in Texas, where the home side emerged with a 4-1 victory. In the return fixture at CITYPARK a few weeks later, CITY2 took an early two-goal lead, but the visitors made a late push to send the match to a penalty shootout. CITY2 won the shootout 5-4, earning the team an additional point. In five all-time meetings with North Texas, CITY2 is 2-2-1 (8 points).
St Louis is coming off a 2-1 defeat to Colorado Rapids 2 in their first outing of the 2024 MLS NEXT Pro season. After a back-and-forth affair for much of the first half, Rapids 2 knocked in two goals just before halftime to take the lead heading into the break. CITY2 made a push in the second half, with midfielder John Klein finishing off a feed from defender Jayden Reid in the 58th minute, but couldn’t draw even, dropping their first regular season match since July 9, 2023.
With his goal, Klein continued a strong run of form dating back to last season. Over his last ten MLS NEXT Pro regular season matches, the midfielder has 11 goal contributions (eight goals, three assists). For Reid, the assist was his first goal contribution for CITY2.
North Texas SC enters the matchup after playing Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 to a 0-0 draw in their last match. WFC2 topped North Texas 4-2 in the shootouts following the stalemate to earn the additional point. Despite the result, North Texas displayed their prowess at working into their opponent’s third, recording the most corner kicks (12) of any MLS NEXT Pro team in the opening weekend of play.
